William WATSON was born in 1815 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He died on 24 Mar 1886 in Elderslie Twp, Bruce, Ontario. He married Jane RITCHIE in 1849 in Vaughan Twp, York, Ontario, Canada.

The following is a history, in genealogy format, of the descendants of William WATSON and Jane RITCHIE as far as I have been able to compile to date. Although it starts with William and Jane being born in Ireland, in 1815 and 1827 respectively, you will soon see this narrative has no beginning and no end.
William was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1815, how he arrived in Upper Canada is not evident but my first encounter with him was in the 1851 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, and at the time he was married and had a two-year-old son. I believe he was married in Upper Canada, but have seen no record of this and arrived here approx. 1848 or earlier. At this time he was renting 50 acres on Lot 22, Concession 5 of Vaughan Township. This farm was located just west of Maple, north of Major MacKenzie Drive on the east side of Weston Road. The census also confirms that William’s cousin William James WATSON was living in with them.
Jane RITCHIE, also born in County Tyrone in 1827, came to Canada with her parents, William RITCHIE and Jane ELLIOTT during the same period and apparently married William in York County circa 1849. The RITCHIE Family eventually settled in Garafraxa Township, Grey County, just north of the town of Durham, Ontario.

Excerpt from the PAISLEY ADVOCATE, March 1886.
As the funeral of the late Wm. Watson was coming along the Elora Road South on Friday afternoon last, the mail train hove in sight and passed over the crossing before more than two thirds of the teams had got over. The engineer very considerately forbore giving the usual whistle or bad work might have been caused by some of the more fractious teams.

OBITUARY FOR JANE RITCHIE-WATSON
Paisley Advocate, Sept. 1907
Mrs. William Watson, the last remaining one of the first settlers on the Elora Road between Paisley and Ellengowan, passed to her rest on Friday last. The deceased, whose maiden name was Jane Ritchie, was a native of Tyrone County, Ireland, where she first saw the light in 1827. After emigrating to Canada her parents settled in Vaughan Twp., York Co., where she was married in 1849 to William Watson. In 1854 they came to the trackless waste of bush which was then just being opened out by the cutting through of the Elora Road, and settled on the farm in Elderslie which became her home for the remainder of her life. The deceased has always enjoyed good health up to about six months ago when she began to fail. She was always respected in the community as a hard-working, industrious woman, a good mother, friend and neighbour. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Paisley Cemetery, and the remains where followed to the grave by a large concourse of people. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Diehl, of the Church of the Ascension, of which church the deceased had been a member. She was predeceased by her husband 21 years. The family of five sons and four daughters survive, viz.: Wm. J. in Elderslie; Andrew in Greenock; James in Brant; Robt. A. and David S. on the old homestead; Mrs. Majury and Mrs. Blough in Elderslie; Sarah A. at home and Mrs. Davison in Michigan. Among the friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ritchie, Chas., Thos., Fred and Bert Ritchie, and Mr. Sam Putherbough from Durham.

WILLIAM JOHN WATSON RETIRES
Paisley Advocate 1906.
Willie John Watson, before giving up possession of his farm to Mr. Porter, invited a large number of friends and acquaintances to spend a social and enjoyable evening under his roof on Thursday night. The guests began to assemble from different parts and in a short time the house was well filled, which bore evidence of the hearty response to his call. The night was spent in various kinds of amusements. Every person present seemed to be in the best of spirits, perfectly happy, all evidently enjoying themselves to the full capacity of their heart's desire. When 12 o'clock came all partook of a most sumptuous repast. The eatables were all in taste and abundance, and which the Prince of Wales would have envied had he been present and had he not been permitted to satisfy his appetite from Mr. Watson's rich bill of fare. But we can assure you that had His Highness been present he would have been treated to the same as the rest, and which, we can vouch, was well worthy to grace ant table in Windsor Castle. Willie John is a number one host, and if he can manage all things well accordingly as that of preparing for a single night's enjoyment, we can see no reason why he should desire to change his present condition of single bliss and freedom.
