THE STORY ABOUT THE WAY THE FAMILY NAME IS PRONOUNCED
Our family of McCallums always pronounced the surname McCallum to rhyme with the word alum. My father was very particular about this and I understood that his grandfather Noble McCallum (1842 - 1928) was also quite particular about the pronunciation. When our family of McCallums moved to Roland, Manitoba there was already a family there and so everyone in the community pronounced our name McCollum. I grew up saying my name one way and the whole community saying it another.
When I was overseas in Scotland in 1962 1 thought it would be nice to see if I could meet some of the clan McCallum, and so I was directed to a Ronnie McCallum's home. He was chief piper to the Duke of Argyll. I went up to the door, knocked and when he came to the door, I explained that I was a McCallum from Canada, touring in Scotland, and wanted to meet some McCallums. We chatted at the door for a couple of minutes, and then he said just a minute, I'll be right back, closed the door, and in about two minutes reappeared. He emerged from the house and walked over to the side of my rented car. After several more minutes he asked me if I could write down my name and address, and produced pen and paper. I complied with his wish and then he looked at the name and address and said, "Well you say it right and spell it right so come on in." I was taken in and given tea and scones and had a nice visit. I think that until that time I had never thought a lot about how I said my name; I just did it because that was the way that I was taught.
When I got home I asked my father about the pronunciation of the name and he just knew that his grandfather Noble was particular about it.
The family in Ireland spell the name McCollum and we spell it McCallum. I found one of the family of James McCallum who came to Toronto and was a first cousin of James and Noble McCallum spelling their name Macallum.

Hi;
I have Hunters, Crawfords, McCallum/McCollum, and Watson, from the Newtownstewart and Omagh area. My McCallum and Watson family emigrated to Ontario Canda about 1835. The Hunter and Crawfords are maiden names of the women the McCallums married prior to that time. They were in the townlands of Crosh, Carregans, Glenock, Ballykeel, etc.
Ernest.

Hello to all;
I am a new subcriber to the Lanark list, and already have recieved some wonderful help from Heather Fyfe's Cambuslang list. Thank you so much for that list, which I recieved from another member Rob Donaldson-Webster, and Thank you to him. I found the widow of Thomas Gemmell, who was Mary Baird, and Thomas Gemmell's four sons families - Thomas Gemmell and Janet Hamilton, John Gemmell and Jean Hamilton, Robert Gemmell and Margaret Dick (my line), and William Gemmell and Mary Somers. Also found William Dick and Elizabeth Park (Margaret Dicks parents) on the list. The wonderful thing is the children are given on the list in birth order.
Robert Gemmell and Margaret Dick's son James Gemmell 1809-1855 married Jean (Jane) Speirs in 1837 at Old Monkland parish. Jane or Jean Speirs says she was born in Glasgow about 1819. Her marriage does not give her parents names. I am looking for information on her parents and siblings. One of the family said she was from Toleson which may be a corruption of Tollcross.
Their known children were born at Kilbirnie and Riccarton in Ayrshire. But the first child we have is born in 1843 so I think there could be one or two more betweeen 1837 and 1843. The 1851 census only names the children starting in 1843. I have not been able to find them on the 1842 census.
Thomas Gemmell's first wife was Mary Smith and mother to the first three sons. Willing to share information on the families.
Thank you, Sincerely, Ernest
