Kris Inwood writes:
3. JAMES2 SIMPSON (JOHN1) was born 1803 in Rothes, Moray, and died 1886 in Ont.. He married ANNA SHERWOOD 1830 in Ont., daughter of JAMES SHERWOOD and MARTHA TUPPER. She was born 1810 in Ont., and died 1894 in Ont..
Notes for JAMES SIMPSON:
- christened December 15, 1803, death September 28, 1886
- based on census families in Yonge Tsp (near the border with Elizabethtown) and Elizabethtown (near the border with Augusta), land records, references to birth of some children, stones in Yonge Mills cemetary and sufficient corroboration to link a family in Scotland which migrated 1815 to Perth area and then came down to Brockville 1820
- birthdate from Scottish church records matches that tombstone to the day although the year is wrong
- The land occupied by James and George in 1851 and 1861 (Elizabethtown) C2 L1,2 was patented 1801 by Thomas Sherwood, possibly Anna Sherwood's father or grandfather. Land records indicate that the land was sold by T. Sherwood to a John Shuter who later sold to John Simpson (father of James and George). NB, there was a 'Suter' family in Rothes.
- 1851: 1.5 story stone house. All family Wesleyan Methodist. Agric census and land records indicate 2nd concession Elizabethtown, the rear parts of lot 1 and lot 2. 1861 census W.M., stone house
- James sells 75 acres of C2 L1 to George for 100 pds in 1835, witnessed by Saml Hemingway and Charles Simpson, registered in 1846
- James and George share the family property 1851 and 1861, and jointly purchase a property in Yonge Tsp (C1L1) in 1851 (Samuel and Emily Eliza Sherwood of York sell to Jas and Geo S Yonge Tsp C1 L1, 400 pds in 1851)
- James purchases another Yonge property (C1L2) in 1869. In 1869 James sells his share of the Elizabethtown to George and moves to Yonge.
- Children names and ages for the family confirm that the James Simpson from Elizabethtown was living in Yonge 1871 (in which year James disappears from Eliztown and henceforth George's family uses the property alone). It is possible that some of the children were already in Yonge 1861: a Cdn-born George Simpson (age 24), Jennet (age 22) and Thomas (age 6), along with a Scottish-born Robert Simpson age 35 (Robert is unknown here - he may be a cousin). Ages in Eliztown for Jzs' children are Geo 23 , Janet 21 , Alexander T 4.
- the Yonge property of James is adjacent to that of Wm Widdis (C1LA) - WW acquired the property in 1860 from the family of his first wife Catherine Kilmurray (following death of CK's father)
- In 1862 WW marries Martha Simpson who according to marriage record is from Yonge. However, there is no Martha Simpson in Yonge 1861. More likely she is from Elizabethtown, d/o of James who has acquired property in Yonge. Martha who married WW is born within a year of the marriage of James and Anna, and seems to be in the latter's hhold 1852. Further confirmation: 1871 Martha and Wm living at C1L1, land belonging to her father James and uncle George.
- There is already a Widdis-Simpson connection insofar as Wm's sister Ann marries Charles Stewart (living Yonge), probably is brother to Wm Stewart who marries Jane Simpson (living Elizabethtown and Augusta)
- James is not buried with the others of his family in Read's Cemetary (Augusta near Eliztown), rather he seems to be in Yonge Mills (although the ages are not quite right).
- Probably Alexander Thomas and Thomas are the same person.
- there is another James Simpson nearby in Yonge 1861 census. This one is born about the same time as Eliztown James, is widowed and has a 13 year old daughter Mary. It is not clear who he is, but either he is a different person or James was enumerated on both of his properties (if the latter, the child could be his niece Mary - correct age). The 1861 census indicates that this James has no property - his name was entered on the farm schedule and then crossed out - overwritten with a reference to George (presumably his son George who already is living in Yonge).
- David Simpson (b abt 1792 Scotland) is living on the same concession (part lot 4). Charles Simpson (b 1810 Rothes) is also nearby

Anna SHERWOOD [Parents] was born on 25 Jan 1810 in Elizabethtown twp, Leeds, Ontario, Canada. She died on 1 Jan 1894 in Brockville, Leeds, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Yonge Mills Cemetery, Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada. She married James SIMPSON about 1828 in of Brockville, Ontario, Canada.

or born 25 Jan 1810

Genealogist Kris Inwood says:
Children of JAMES SHERWOOD and MARTHA TUPPER are:
28. i. JAMES8 SHERWOOD.
29. ii. HAMILTON SHERWOOD, b. Abt. 1809.
30. iii. ANNA SHERWOOD, b. 1810, Ont.; d. 1894, Ont..

32. vi. AUGUSTUS EMERSON SHERWOOD, b. Abt. 1825, Elizabethtown; d. 1874, Brockville, Ont..
vii. GEORGE SHERWOOD, b. Abt. 1835, Canada.
(He has no record of Alpheus reported by William Sherwood.)
30. ANNA8 SHERWOOD (JAMES7, THOMAS6, SETH5, THOMAS4, JOHN3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1810 in Ont., and died 1894 in Ont.. She married JAMES SIMPSON 1830 in Ont., son of JOHN SIMPSON and MARGARET PETRIE. He was born 1803 in Rothes, Moray, and died 1886 in Ont..
Notes for ANNA SHERWOOD:
- birth January 25, 1810; death January 01, 1894
- bdate, death and maiden name from burial stone Yonge Mills Cemetary (with her husband James)
- marriage date from census 1861
- The land occupied by James and George in 1851 and 1861 (Elizabethtown) C2 L1,2 was patented 1801 by Thomas Sherwood, sold to a John Shuter, then sold to John Simpson father of James and George. This property is beside that of Thomas Sherwood (Anna's grandfather) C1 L1,2.

Kris Inwood's Notes for ANNA SHERWOOD:
- birth January 25, 1810; death January 01, 1894
- bdate, death and maiden name from burial stone Yonge Mills Cemetary (with her husband James)
- marriage date from census 1861
- The land occupied by James and George in 1851 and 1861 (Elizabethtown) C2 L1,2 was patented 1801 by Thomas Sherwood, sold to a John Shuter, then sold to John Simpson father of James and George. This property is beside that of Thomas Sherwood (Anna's grandfather) C1 L1,2.
- REASONS TO IDENTIFY JAMES AS ANNA'S FATHER
1. Her 1891 census entry indicates her father and mother were born in Canada, likely before 1792. James fits, and all other Sherwoods can be eliminated (some more convincingly than others).
2. Her husband James Simpson and his brothers and sisters lived next to James' property (C1,L1-2). Members of the Simpson family (including in-law Stewarts and Daltons) later acquired parts of the Sherwood properties on the first concession.
3. Her name was that of James' mother. Most of her children have the names of James' children.
4. At the time of Methodist expansion James and Anna baptized some of their children jointly with families of James' brothers and sisters.
5. The lack of information about Anna itself is consistent with James being the father. Baptismal records survive for none of his children - (possibly because most Church of England records from the time have disappeared). There is little other information about James or his family; like his father James was a farmer who did not seek or receive publicity.

Anna Sherwood, born Jan 22 1811 in Elisabethtown Leeds Ontario, daughter of James Sherwood (born Sept 1784) is one of my ancestors. His first wife was Martha Tupper and they had several children. Anna was his second family, but I cannot locate her mother's name (born 1788 same place). If anyone is interested in my line from Anna Sherwood and James Simpson to present, please contact me.
