Ruth Sherwood and Joshua Holcomb are my 8gGrandparents. To my knowledge, nobody is entirely certain that her mother's name was Fitch. I was not aware that she had married other than Joshua and John Barlow (I'm not saying she didn't). I personally don't have the documentation, but you might try posting on the Holcomb Forum. The only birth date I have seen for Ruth is 1644, with a death date of 10 Sep 1699. The date of marriage for Ruth and Joshua, as I've seen it, is 04 Jun 1663 and none is shown for John Barlow. Hope this helps, good hunting. Jeff Holcomb.

Did she marry John Barlow or did he marry a Ruth Drake? (IGI) Estimates of her marriage date with John Barlow seem to range over 30 years!

Message Board Post:
Very happy to report that Leslie Mahler has written an excellent article in The American Genealogist (October 2005 Vol. 80 No. 4) regarding English records found for Thomas Sherwood (c1586-1655) in the parish of Kettle Baston, Suffolk England. Although it appears that Thomas Sherwood may not be from Kettle Baston, some of the baptisms of his children were recorded there.
It is always exciting to discover that scholarly research has been done on one's ancestor, so I thought I'd share the great news so that others can look up the article for themselves - not only in regards to the English records but the footnotes relied on by the author as well. Perhaps this will spur additional efforts to finally locate Thomas's origins!

One submission to the IGI has:
"Thomas Sherwood, born 24 Dec 1590, St. Mary-St.Peter, Moblethorpes, Lincolnshire, England
died 21 Jul 1655, Stratford, Fairfield, Ct. Wd;wp, 25 Oct 1655, married 21 Oct 1604, Sfk?, Eng"

Thomas Sherwood, the father to Jane (Sherwood) Merritt, came from Ipwich England in 1636, with his wife and their four youngest children. According to a Sherwood genealogy (Daniel Sherwood and his paternal Ancestors), Thomas Sherwood's older children "were left behind to come later, it is thought with Robert Seabrook, in 1638/9--namely: Jane, Tamsen,... Mary, and Sarah; though we have seen it stated that Jane [Sherwood] married (in England), a Mr. Thompson, or Thomasine. The date Jane is thought to have come over from England is about 24 years before the Merritt records have it. If this were to follow, Jane would have been about 2, and hardly married to Thomas Merritt, or a Mr Thompson/Thomasine. This leaves a state of confusion as to when Jane, or Thomas Merritt came from England, and if they were indeed married in England or once among the colonies. Records of Jane and Thomas together are scant, leaving the state of affairs unsure.

______________________________________________________________________________

Thomas Sherwood was born in England in 1585-1586, and died in Fairfield, Connecticut, in 1655. Alice Seabrook [the name Seabrook is disputed] was born in England in 1586-1587, and died in Connecticut. They were married in England. She took the name Alice Sherwood. They had eight children:
i. Jane Sherwood was born in England.
ii. Thomasin Sherwood was born in England.
iii. Margaret Sherwood was born in England.
iv. Sarah Sherwood was born in England.
v. Hannah Sherwood was born in England about 1620.
vi. Rose Sherwood was born in England about 1622. She married first, Thomas Rumble, second, Thomas Barlow, and third, Edward Nash.
vii. Thomas Sherwood [#1304]: He was born in England about 1624, and died in Fairfield about 1698.
viii. Rebecca Sherwood was born in England about 1625.
-
His second marriage was to Mary Fitch. [The name Fitch is disputed. According to Jura Maclean Sherwood, Mary Fitch was their daughter in law.] They had six children:
i. Stephen Sherwood: Per Jacobus, Stephen conveyed property in 1680/1 to "my father Banks." He married Rebecca Turney, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Odell) Turney of this genealogy.
ii. Matthew Sherwood was born about 1644. He married Sarah Turney, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Odell) Turney of this genealogy. [Jura Sherwood says he later married Mary Fitch, daughter of Thomas Fitch.]
iii. Mary Sherwood
iv. Ruth Sherwood: She married Joshua Holcomb in Windsor, Connecticut, on June 4, 1663.
v. Abigail Sherwood died in 1692. In about 1668, she married Daniel Lockwood.
vi. Isaac Sherwood: He married Elizabeth Jackson, daughter of John Jackson who was son of Henry Jackson of this genealogy.
-
From The Families of Old Fairfield is taken:
Thomas came to Boston in the Frances, April 1634, age 48, with wife Alice, age 47, and children Anna (14), Rose (11), Thomas (10), and Rebecca (9). He came to Wethersfield with the first settlers in 1635; he was a carpenter. On March 25, 1640, he sold his lands to George Wyllys. The family removed to Stamford where they lived until 1648 when he sold to John Holly and settled in Fairfield. He may have been related to Thomas Morehouse whose holdings adjoined his in Wethersfield and who accompanied him in his subsequent migrations.
-
If the age of the son Thomas was misstated in the ship's list, he could have been the Thomas son of Thomas and Alice baptized at St. Michael's, London, England, January, 23, 1630.
-
Thomas's will was dated July 21, 1655, and was proved on October 25, 1655. It mentions children by his former wife, Thomas, Jane, Tarnsen, Margaret, Sarah, Hannah, Rose, and Rebecca; his wife Mary, and children by her, Stephen, Matthew, Mary, Ruth, Abigail, and Isaac.
-
Fairfield Deeds mention on January 18, 1658 [1658/9] that "John Banks hath married Mary Sherwood the relict."
-
Thomas's widow Mary married (2) John Banks and died in 1694. Will of Mary Banks was dated January 6, 1693 [1693/4]; it mentions son Stephen Sherwood's daughter Ruth; son Matthew Sherwood's daughter Mary; Hannah "Lumis"; daughter Ruth; sons Stephen, and Isaac. The residue was to go to son Matthew. Ens. Wheeler and James Bennett, Sr., were the overseers. The inventory of the estate was dated March 13, 1693/4.
-
In a footnote, Jacobus adds: Statements that this Mary (Thomas's second wife) was a Fitch seem to confuse her with her son Matthew's wife who was Mary Fitch. [Jura Sherwood concurs.]
-
Thomas's wives' surnames are from Descendants of John Page (1614X1687).

THE THREE 17th CENTURY THOMAS SHERWOODS OF CONNECTICUT
by Jura Mclean Sherwood (Copyright 1998)
148 Meadow View Dr, Medford, Oregon 97504, USA

In response to Geoff Sherwood's article in the last "The Sherwood Forest", I'd like to clarify a few points and perhaps put to rest once and for all, the confusion concerning the three men named Thomas Sherwood who lived in Connecticut in the mid 17th century. Two we know, were father and son, the third one's origins remain a mystery, but he was definitely not the same man as Thomas, Jr. son of the immigrant Thomas Sherwood, nor was he the grandson, as has been suggested by some.

I'll begin with Thomas Sherwood born about 1585. We can deduce this by his age given as 48 years in the list of passengers who embarked from Ipswich, Suffolk, England on the "Francis" the last day of April 1634, arriving at Boston, Massachusetts in June 1634. Traveling with him were his wife Alice, age 47 years and four children, Anna (called Hannah in some later records), age 14, Rose 11, Thomas 10 and Rebecca 9. The family didn't stay long in Boston. Thomas went with the first settlers in 1635 to Wethersfield, Connecticut where he sold land to George Wyllys in March 1640. This was probably about the time that Alice died and he then married Mary. Their son Stephen was born about 1641. In 1648 Thomas sold out to John Holly and settled in Fairfield, Connecticut where he remained until his death. His will dated 21 July 1655 was proved 22 Oct 1655. (Invoice of estate of Thomas Sherwood, Sr. taken 7 Sep 1655 - Probate Records of Fairfield County). He names his son and six daughters by his "first wife" as Jane, Tamsen, Margaret, Anna (Hannah), Thomas, Rose and Rebecca. His will further says "to my loving and well beloved wife Mary Sherwood", and names his children Mary, Stephen, Matthew, Abigail, Ruth and Isaac.

Before we leave Thomas Sherwood (referred to as Sr. in his probate), let's set the record straight about his two wives and determine, once and for all, that their last names have never been found.

Alice, who was 47 in 1634 must have been born about 1587. She was not, nor could she have been the daughter of Robert Seabrook and his wife Alice Goodspeed. The marriage between Robert Seabrook and Alice Goodspeed is recorded in the parish registers of Wingate, Buckinghamshire, England 12 Sep 1596. Alice Goodspeed was baptised 19 Aug 1576, the daughter of Nicholas Goodspeed, Jr. and Margaret his wife.

There can be little doubt that Alice, the wife of Thomas Sherwood, Sr. was born nine years before Robert Seabrook married Alice Goodspeed who was then 20 years old. Robert was an early settler of Stratford, Connecticut. (Stratford is significant here.)

An old Fairfield Deed dated 18 Jan 1658 states "John Banks hath married Mary Sherwood the relict." Here it should be confirmed that she was NOT Mary Fitch. Records show that giving her that name was a slip of the pen by a woman writing a Sherwood history. It is unfortunate that this has been recorded by subsequent "genealogists" so often that it is accepted as fact. The truth is, Mary's son by Thomas Sherwood, Captain Matthew Sherwood, married Mary Fitch daughter of Thomas Fitch of Norwalk, Connecticut as his second wife. Her gravestone records her age as 87 when she died 25 Dec 1730, making her birth about 1644 (Thomas Sherwood, Sr. and his second wife, Mary had children of their own by then).

Thomas Sherwood, Jr., son of Thomas and Alice, married four times. His first wife was Sarah Wheeler, daughter of Thomas Wheeler. She died before 1659 when he married Ann Turney, daughter of Benjamin Turney. He married third Elizabeth the widow of John Cable. His fourth wife was Sarah, the daughter of Humphrey Hide and widow of Peter Coley. These marriages are well documented, the last with an agreement dated 24 June 1695. Thomas Sherwood, Jr. died soon after this marriage. His inventory was dated 12 Mar 1698.

This brings us to Thomas Sherwood of unknown origins who lived and died in Stratford, Connecticut. He married before 1642, Sarah Seabrook who was born about 1623 to Robert Seabrook. In 1657 she is mentioned as being 34 years old with a son named John age 4 and an unweaned child. (Even with today's modern medical miracles, this would have been impossible for Alice!)

According to the Stratford records dated 1 Jan 1657, Thomas Sherwood is mentioned as "Having departed this life", His will dated 4 Jun 1657 names his wife Sarah, sons John and Thomas (under 18), dau. Mary. His other daughter, Elizabeth is not mentioned by name in his will. That these children of Thomas Sherwood were the grandchildren of Robert Seabrook can be confirmed by consulting the Stratford Deeds where mention is made of gifts "from Grandfather Robert Seabrook."

The three wills of the three Thomas Sherwoods are clear that Thomas Sr died in 1655, his son Thomas died in 1698 and Thomas of unknown origins died 1657. What's the confusion?

The information regarding the Sherwoods of Suffolk, England that Geoff Sherwood quoted, came from an article entitled "Connecticut Ancestors of Bergen Chapter Members (DAR) 1938 by Mrs. Ella Sherwood. I found this article in the Daughter's of the American Revolution Library about twenty years ago, when I lived in the Washington, D.C. area.

I attempted to find the sources Ella Sherwood used for her conclusions by consulting the Suffolk parish records. The only ones I could confirm were: Thomas, baptized 1 Jan 1541 (not 1540 as she states,) at St. Nicholas, Ipswich. No parents names were given. I also found the baptisms of Edras and Dorcas' children Xfoper (Christopher) 20 Mar 1586 and Dorcas 7 Jul 1588, both at St. Nicholas, Ipswich.

Twenty five years ago when I began doing genealogical research, I set my goal as identifying all of my husband's immigrant ancestors. With exception of the two wives of Thomas Sherwood the 1634 immigrant, and three other women whose surnames I cannot determine, I've achieved my goal. Below are some of the sources I've used to reach my conclusions on the Sherwood research. I hope others will continue the search for Thomas, Alice and Mary's roots.

Dear Cousins, Regarding the arrival of Thomas Sherwood in America, the following passage from John Winthrop's Journal may be of interest: The book is "Winthrop's Journal, History of New England, 1630--1649," edited by James Kendall Hosmer, LL.D., published 1908. John Winthrop came to Massachusetts Bay in 1630 on the ship "Arbella" with other ships. He was a leader in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Boston). At the time he wrote the passage below, he had been in New England for four years. In July of 1634, he wrote the following: "The last month arrived here fourteen great ships, and one at Salem." ... "For the success of the passengers and cattle in the ships: Divers of the ships lost many cattle; but the two which came from Ipswich, of more than one hundred and twenty, lost but seven. None of the ships lost any passengers, but the Elizabeth Dorcas, which, having a long passage, and being hurt upon a rock at Scilly, and very ill victualled, she lost sixty passengers at sea, and divers came sick on shore, who all recovered, (through the mercy of God,) except [blank]." From other souces, we are told that "the two which came from Ipswich" were the "Francis" and the "Elizabeth". (I am assuming that the "Elizabeth" from Ipswich" and the "Elizabeth Dorcas" are two different ships.) Thomas Sherwood and his wife Alice and their four youngest children came on the "Francis". The two ships sailed from Ipswich, England, in April and arrived in Massachusetts Bay in June of 1634. According to the above passage, the "Francis" had a successful voyage. All passengers arrived safely and nearly all of the cattle. I thought it was interesting that John Winthrop regularly chronicled the arrival of both passengers and cattle. It underscores the fact that the beef, pork, mutton, that we eat come from animals that were imported at one time or another. If we ate only American food, we would eat more turkey, venison, and buffalo. Thomas Sherwood, at some point, moved to Wethersfield, Connecticut. But he may have been somewhere in the Massachusetts Bay Colony for a few years. Does anyone on the list have any information regarding mention of Thomas Sherwood in Boston or surrounding settlements in 1634, 1635, 1636, etc.?
Best wishes, Karen Sherwood Williams

She is said to be Mary Fitch, daughter of Thomas Fitch and Ann Reve but this is disputed by Sherwood family genealogists.

Is this the George Sherwood M.P.P.?
Some months ago Dr. William Frederick Jackson, of Mowbath Hall, Brockville, discovered a further register which had been kept by Mr. Smart, having to do with baptisms which he had performed, and the contents of this register are herewith reproduced, together with the following testimonial to Mr. Smart's services, dated at Brockville, May 4, 1848, and signed by Alexander Morris, the Hon. James Morris, Dr. Robert Edmondson, Lieutenant-Colonel Ogle R. Gowan, M.P.P., Hon. George Sherwood, M.P.P., Sherrif Adiel Sherwood and Alpheus Jones (Prescott), which was found accompanying the register:

Eldad TUPPER [Parents] was born in 1754 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. He died in 1832 in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. He married Alice or Elsie Jane SHERMAN on 1 Oct 1774 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.

FROM IGI
Eldad Tupper Male
Birth: 1754 Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts
Death: 1832 Brockville, , , Ontario
Father: Prince Tupper
Mother: Jane Ellis
Spouse: Alice or Elsie Jane Sherman
Marriage: 01 OCT 1774 Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts

FROM IGI - This looks good except for the "North Carolina". I would guess that this Loyalist family evacuated to Nova Scotia initially before settling in the Brockville area of Leeds County, Ontario.
