Archibald MCCALLUM [Parents] was born in 1796 in Crosh, Tyrone, Ireland. He died on 7 Oct 1844 in Vaughn Twp, York, Ontario, Canada. He was buried in St Pauls Cem., Vaughn Twp, Ontario, Canada. He married Frances (Fanny) WATSON about 1826 in of Crosh, Newton-Stewart, Tyrone, Ireland.

Archie McCallum was born in 1796 at Crosh, Newtownstewart, Tyrone, Ireland. He married Fanny Watson. Fanny was born circa 1808 at Carregans, Omagh, Tyrone, Ireland. I have not found the marriage but presume it is in 1826 or 1827. The story on how Archie met Fanny has come down in family tradition and I have no proof, but it is as follows.
-
When James McCallum died he apparently left the home farm to one of the younger sons and Archie and his mother went to the Hunter place at Glenock. It was here that Archie met Fanny. There is the tradition that the McCallums were not too pleased because Fanny was only a weaver's daughter while the McCallums were farmers. Fanny was supposed to be very pretty according to the family members. The story goes that after Archie and Fanny were married they continued to live at Glenock until Mary Hunter McCallum died. After Mary died, Archie and Fanny apparently sold out and came to Canada in 1836. (If the birth year for Sarah is correct it says she is born on the sea in the 1901 census and gives the year 1836, but Mary always said she was seven when they came, which would mean 1835.) The family tell the story that they got an earlier booking than they were going to take and the weather was very contrary, so the ship found it hard to tack. They were on the water six weeks. Their daughter Sarah was born on the water on the way over. They came to Fanny's brother James Watson in Vaughan Township, York County. Ontario, Canada, and I believe brought Fanny's parents Noble and Sarah Watson with them. Archie proceeded to purchase 45 acres, being part of the north half of the east half of Lot 32 Concession 7 Vaughan Township for Ð 100.00. This was part of James Watson's farm in Vaughan Township. The deed was registered 31 March 1843. There they lived. The McCallum family were all "Free Church" Presbyterian.
-
When Noble McCallum was two years old his father died and was buried in St. Paul's Presbyterian Churchyard on lot 22 concession 7 Vaughan township. The tombstone reads as follows:
Archibald McCallum Died
Oct 7, 1844
Aged 48 years
-
A faithful friend and husband dear
A tender father lieth here
Great is the loss that we sustain
But hope in heaven to meet again.

I showed Archie's birth as 1796, identical to his son Archibald. From the birthdates of the great grandchildren, this HAS TO BE the birth year of the grandson. Based on this I have re-estimatred the birth years of Archie and his son James. I show Archie's death as 1844, this most likely is the death of the grandson.- Bill Buchanan.

-
The oldest members of the family all went up to Durham, Ontario in Grey county, and married in that area. Noble stayed down near the home area and worked for a while in Peel county which is the neighboring county to York. Vaughan township borders Peel county. Margaret Jane Girin married John Gowland and after farming in Toronto Gore township they moved in 1883 to the Priceville area near Durham, Ont. When Fanny and Thomas retired between 1871 and 1881 they purchased a house in Brampton, Ont. and then about 1883 they purchased lot 13 of the south concession Artemesia twp. near Priceville. Fanny died there on 25 October 1890 and is buried in the Priceville Cemetery. Thomas later sold the house at Priceville and came back down to the Clairville and Brampton area and lived between his daughter Margaret Gowland who had by this time moved back in 1897, and step-son Noble McCallum. The Noble McCallum children used to quote grandad Ginn's quaint Irish sayings quite often, and I now wish I had written them down as they said them. Lillian McCallum Baxter said that Grandad Ginn used to say 'Gort and quit your travellin' when the children were running around.

After the Noble McCallum family moved to Manitoba in 1900 it is believed Thomas made his home with his daughter Margaret Gowland. He is shown there in the 1901 census. Unfortunately, even with all the research that has been done, we have not found Thomas Ginn's death or place of burial. Noble E. McCallum told me that Grandad Ginn was buried near Brampton, Ont.

James & Noble McCallum
When James and Noble McCallum were not too old their mother made them promise to not use alcoholic beverages because their father never did. Both boys kept this pledge all their lives. They often said that many a pail of hard cider they carried to the fields to the harvesters but they never touched a drop.
You will notice in the above photo that James is considerably taller then Noble. Noble was 5 feet I I inches and was called the runt as he was the first McCallum under 6 feet. I understand that their sister Eliza Bell was a very tall woman.
