ALBERT DELORME October 20, 2004
ALBERT 'AB' NOEL MARCEL JOSEPH DELORME 1919 - 2004
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Albert Delorme on October 18, 2004 at the age of 84 years, after a lengthy illness. Albert was born on Christmas Eve in 1919 in the town of Fisher Branch, MB. Within a year of his birth his father Fulgence died from tuberculosis leaving him and his mother Rose Anna (nee Nault) behind. Rose Anna later married Arthur Coutu and it is this man that Albert knew as his father until Mr. Coutu's passing in 1941. Rose Anna would later pass away in 1985 at the age of 92. Like many of his era, Albert grew up knowing many hardships including the loss of his father at an early age, working long hours on the farm, hauling cord wood in sub-zero temperatures, the Depression, working chest-deep in frigid water sorting logs for the Pine Falls pulp mill, fighting in Europe during the Second World War and welding rail in plus 30 degree Celsius temperatures. All of these contributed to creating a man who understood the value of hard work, who had the fortitude to stick things out when life got tough and, who appreciated the many gifts in life. The gifts that he valued most were his family and friends. The Delorme household was renowned for its hospitality. 'Ab' and Alice cherished nothing more than to share "un petit coup" and a great meal filled with laughter, surrounded by friends and family. Sadly, after a life together for 42 years, his wife Alice passed away in 1989. As life would have it however he would later meet Agnes who lovingly shared his last 14 years. 'Ab' loved his job. For 42 years he looked to each day with joy and anticipation working for the CNR as a forman/welder. He found great pride in his commitment to Canada and the South Alberta Regiment (SAR) during the Second World War. He enlisted in 1941 and returned from Europe in 1946. For many years Dad would not talk about his war years however later in life he enjoyed travelling with Agnes regularly to participate in his old regiment's biannual conventions. One of the most memorable events of his life was his return to Europe with his comrades from the SAR to celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE day. Albert leaves behind his beloved companion Agnes Nightingale; his children, Denis, Diane (Rene) and Greg (Jeannette); his grandchildren, Janelle, Danielle and Elise; his sister Jeanne Guimond; and his brothers, Maurice Coutu (Ethel) and Paul Coutu (Emily). Albert was predeceased by his wife Alice (nee Camire), his brother George Coutu and his brother-in-law Rosario Guimond. Pallbearers will be Raymond Camire, Earl Dudek, Mike Felewich, Paul Zommer, Ken Pauls, Tom Halbert and Bradley Guimond. Albert's family would like to thank the staff at the Deer Lodge Centre (6E wing) and the Health Sciences Centre for their care. A special thanks to Diane Bishop for watching over Dad when we could not be there. The funeral mass will be held at the St. Boniface Cathedral, 190 avenue de la Cathedrale at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Deer Lodge Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3 or to Parkinson Society Manitoba, Suite 302, 171 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1M4. [I can't find George (Fulgence?) nor Theodore in the 1901 census. There is a Theodore but born the wrong year. (No date is given for him, and the school may have his year of birth wrong.)
Hi Bill,
I found a George Delorme who married a Rose Anna Neault (in 1919- Province of MB Stats) under the Neault write-up. MB Stats spells Neault as Nault and Rose Anna married Fulgence Delorme. George died shortly after his son, Albert, was born and Rose married again in 1922.
As I found nothing else, I phoned another genealogist who I used to know when I lived at Fisher Branch. She did some searching and found out that there was a Theodore and Bernadette Delorme who used to live around Fisher Branch. Theodore enlisted in 1919? and at that time they had three children. At some point they moved to St. Rita, MB. All together they had many children (17 I think she told me?) Seems that these folks could be Marie Street's folks as her name was Marie Bernadette Delorme.
My friend says that Albert's son, Greg Delorme, is into genealogy and gave me his name and phone number - 274 la Verendrye Rue, Winnipeg, MB R2H 0B8 (204) 235-1940.
