Shown in the above picture are four generations of a well-known Glenelg Township family. In the centre is James Tucker, who is celebrating his 92dn birthday on Thursday, November 25th. He lives in Egremont with his daughter, Mrs. James Hargrave, but is celebrating at the home of his other daughter, Mrs. Joseph Brown, in Bentinck Township. On the left is Thomas B. [Brydges] Tucker, who lives on the homestead in Egremont. The small child is Norman Peter Tucker, three and a half year old son of Norman James Tucker, who lives in Durham.

Durham - Feb. 16 - The death of James Tucker removes one of the oldest men in this district. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Brown, in Bentinck [twp] Thursday last. Nov. 26 he celebrated his 92nd birthday. Since that time he had rapidly failed in health, and death was not unexpected.

A most respected man of sterling qualities, he was the son of James and Mary Tucker, and was born in South Glenelg, near Top Cliff on Nov 26, 1850. He had spent his life in and around Durham, receiving his education in Durham schools. When a young man, he began farming on Lot 4, Concession 2 in Egremont, where he lived an industrious life. He married Fanny Bridges of Wingham, who died in 1931. His only son, Thomas B. Tucker now lives on the homestead. Two daughters, Mrs. James Hargrave in Egremont and Mrs. Joseph Brown in Betinck also survive. One aged brother, George, lives at Tisdale, Saskatchewan, and there are two sisters, Mrs. John W. McKechnie of Durham and Mrs. David McCrie of Swift Currrent. There are 22 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One grandson, Pte. James Hargrave is in England on active service. Another LAC T. Elmer Tucker , is with the RCAF [Royal Canadian Air Force] stationed at Calgary. Capt. W. A. [Walter Adam] Tucker, MP [Member of Parliament] of Rosthern is a nephew.

Fanny Anna BRYDGES [Parents] was born on 1 Apr 1860 in Belgrave, Ontario, Canada. She died on 14 Aug 1931 in Egremont Twp, Grey, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Trinity Cem., Durham, Ontario, Canada. She married James TUCKER on 29 Mar 1877 in Wingham, Huron, Ontario, Canada.

From the Durham Chronicle September 1900
We regret this week to chronicle the death of Walter Tucker, who departed this life on Sunday last at the ripe age of 62 years. At the age of twenty five years he came to Canada and lived in the vicinity of Toronto for about three or four years after which he moved to the township of Glenelg and settled on a farm about three miles this side of Princeville between which farm and Durham he made the road. passable for the requirements of pioneer traffic. After living on the farm for about 7 years he moved into Durham where, with the exception of two or three years residence in Egremont, he lived ever since. For many years he followed the trade of butcher, and through strict attention to business accumulated a fair share of this world's goods. The deceased was married at Woodbridge at the age of 29 years to Miss Mary McCallum , who predeceased him, about eleven years. The result of the union was six children, three sons and three daughters, all of whom are still living. The sons are James in Egremont and John and George at Portage La Prairie. The daughters are Mrs. David McCrie, near Durham, Mrs. John McKechnie near Rocky Saugeen and Mrs. James Simpson, who resides at McDonald, Manitoba. Mr. Tucker was a very genial, kindly disposed Christian gentleman, highly respected in the community and beloved by those who knew him best. He was Methodist in religion and a liberal in politics. For some time he had not been in good health and his departure at the last although somewhat sudden not unexpected. We tender our sympathy to the mourners, relatives and friends. The remains were interred Tuesday afternoon at Trinity church cemetery.

THE MARY MCCALLUM AND WALTER TUCKER FAMILY
Mary McCallum was born 22 December 1827 in Crosh, Newtownstewart, Tyrone County, Ireland, the daughter of Archibald McCallum and Fanny Watson. She said she came to Canada with her parents at the age of seven which means 1835. After living in Vaughan township, York county she was married at Woodbridge on 22 February 1849 to Walter Adam Tucker. Walter was born in Somerset, England on 25 March 1818. Walter and Mary settled on lot 23 concession 3 Glenelg township. They received the patent to the farm in 1853. MARY MCCALLUM TUCKER
From the Durham Chronicle November 1889
Mary McCallum, wife of Mr. Walter Tucker, who died on the third instant was a native of the Emerald Isle. It was just 62 years ago that she first saw the light of day in the beautiful little village of Crosh, in the fair County of Tyrone. She came to Canada when but eight years of age. Forty one years ago she stood before the altar with Walter Tucker and the minister pronounced the words which made them one. This was in the township of Vaughan. They moved to Genelg, being among the first settlers, and endured the toils and bore the burdens of those early days. Many years ago they ceased and the family moved to town where she resided to the day of her death. For forty five years she was a member of the Wesleyan Church. Her end was peace. She departed this life with unshaken hope in a glorious resurrection. A husband mourns a true helpmate, three sons and three daughters weep for the loss of a mother dear. The chair is vacant, the familiar form is no longer seen. The wise councils [sic] of a loving mother will never more be heard.

Hi, Bill,
I’ve appreciated the e-mails I have received today. I have searched many times to see if I can track down Richard and Ann through the censuses. Another relative has also searched and could not find them in 1851 and 1861 censuses.
I do not think that the 1851 England census of the family of Arthur Martin and Mary could be our family because the IGI shows the following christenings:
Richard Martin christened on 6 Mar 1842 at Ludgvan. Father: Richard Martin Mother: Ann
Arthur Martin christened on 24 Oct 1847 at Ludgvan Father: Richard Martin Mother: Ann
The date, place and parents look right for our Arthur. I have not been able to find a marriage for Richard and Ann. After spending more time on it today it occurred to me that it is possible that Richard might have died before the 1851 census. Ann might be the head of the house. I do not have access to the 1851 censuses these days but I wondered if it is worth a search for Arthur aged 3 and Richard aged 9 in a family. I had terrible trouble finding my paternal grandfather and it turned out that his father had died and his mother had remarried.
Best wishes,
Gwynith

Might this be him? The birth would be in the right time period.

Hi, Bill,
Thank you for all your work. I will just comment on each item in your latest e-mail.
1851 census – I have the birth of a Richard Martin, son of Ann and Richard in Ludgvan in 1842 – Richard Martin aged 22 in 1851 would not have been the father.
Burial - Richard Martin could be our Richard. The age looks possible. Gulval and Trevallack are only about 2 miles from Ludgvan. It is a shame he died in 1869, because I have just checked that the Cornwall Family History Society have the 1871 census of Gulval online. If Ann was still alive in 1871 she might be there.
I wonder if we are not having much luck with marriage details because they were married in either a Baptist or Methodist Church. I have found that there were a Baptist and a Methodist church in Penzance and a Methodist church in St. Ives in the mid 1800’s, but I understand that there are very few records still left from any of the non-conformist churches of that time..
Last night I did some research on Lethbridge. I now know that it is close to the Rockies and there used to be coal mines there. I wondered why Charles Hipperd would have migrated so far to the west of Canada, and I now realize he was a miner too. One of my four daughters was living in Houston, Texas from May, 2003 until October 2004 and she told me today she used to visit Calgary and Edmonton very often so she was able to describe Alberta to me. Her work was to monitor clinical drug trials in hospitals in various places in the US and Canada.
Best wishes,
Gwynith

Connection?
Arthur's birthplace and his wife's match those of Richard and his wife, so there is a good chance that this Arthur is Richard's younger brother.

Hi, Bill,
When I last wrote to you I thought I was going to give family history a rest for a while, because I really have a lot of other things I should be doing. However, I decided to have one last try to find a marriage for Ann and Richard Martin and I think I have found it. I went to Family History Online and found a civil marriage in Cornwall that looks good.
They had a record of a marriage of Richard Martin to Ann Orchard which took place on 16th January, 1836 in Ludgvan parish. No extra information – this is how it looked. I’ve underlined and bold typed the important bits. Their first child was born in 1836 so the date looks good.
-
6. Parish Ludgvan Husband Forenames Richard Alias – Signed – BT's – Husband Surname MARTIN Alternate – Alias – Signed – BT's – Date 16 Jan 1836 Wife Forenames Ann Alias – Signed – BT's – Wife Surname ORCHARD Alternate – Alias – Signed – BT's – Date BT's – Remarks –
-
I then searched the IGI for the birth of an Ann Orchard and found the following:
Anne Orchard Christened 4 Oct 1812 Sithney Cornwall.
Father: Hannibal Orchard Mother:Mary
-
The marriage shows ANN and the christening shows ANNE but maybe she decided to drop the “E”. The births of all her children except one show the Ann without an E.
The children were all christened in Ludgvan on the following dates.
JAMES 16 DEC 1836
JOHN 29 JUL 1838
MARY 19 JUL 1840
RICHARD 6 MAR 1842
CHRISTOPHER 24 OCT 1845 (Birth not Christening)
ARTHUR 24 OCT 1847
CHARITY CARDIS 25 JUN 1850
I haven’t had any success at all in tracing the birth or death of Richard.
I found this 1881 census entry for a Richard Martin. I think he is Arthur’s brother. His birth date fits. Arthur spent some time in Durham, too.

I was interested to hear that you are a retired teacher. So is my husband. I started out as a teacher, but then stayed home to raise my five children. Our son is Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Medical School in Tucson, Arizona. He manages to get home to see us every year, which is wonderful because my husband has heart trouble (He has had two triple by-passes) and is not allowed to travel very far from home.
Kind regards,
Gwynith

Ann ORCHARD [Parents] was christened on 4 Oct 1812 in Sithney, Cornwall, England. She died after 1881 in Ludgvan, Cornwall, England. She married Richard MARTIN on 16 Jan 1836 in Ludgvan, Cornwall, England.

Information from Gwynith Potter Krieg of South Australia

She may NOT be the daughter of Hannibal and Mary Orchard, as the christening date seems about 3 years later than I would expect but:
1. it is the closest match we have found
2. children were not necessarily christened as babies, so age 3 is not unreasonable.
